Defiant Brood – Self Titled

Hailing from Western MD, Defiant Brood exist to pummel the listener with their eclectic blend of Punk and Metal while staying rooted in the genres of Horror Punk and Deathrock. Their new LP was recently released on Snubbed By Allegedly. It delves into lyrical themes atypical of the genre; pulling from personal experience and telling tales of struggles with depression, suicidal ideation, and alienation. I like the self titled approach that Defiant Brood took with this LP. You can’t fuck up a name if you don’t bother making one.

Seriously, this album comes out hard af with “Sarah.” Palm mutes and pick slides set it up perfect. For a second, I forgot what year it was and thought that I was listening to AFI’s The Art of Drowning in my friend’s college dorm. It’s refreshing to hear a good fast skate-ish band with a chick singer. Andddd she BELTS.

“The Knife” is another fucking ripper with killer backing vocals. The Metal influence is heavy and welcomed with this track. The harmonies in the bridge are gorgeous and a nice contrast to the intense vocals of the chorus. Stay out the knife sites.

“Siren Song” begins exactly as it should with gently crashing waters and then BOOM! Those familiar impassioned drums and guitars kick in. The lead vocals are sweetly seductive and lure us through the rest of the album.

The LP ends as strong as it started with “Lilith.” It’s a 90 seconds instrumental opening before telling a story and ending with another instrumental segment. It’s a testament to the band’s artistry.

Legit, all the songs are killer no filler. Crazy riffs and the drums reinforce the whole thing. And again – the VOCALS!! Not many bands hit on all cylinders, but Defiant Brood definitely does. Can’t wait to catch them live.

Chris likes punk rock. He sings in the band IDLEMINDS and scouts for Snubbed By Allegedly. He’s ok. Not great, but not terrible. Believe him when he says that bands are good and read into it when he says nothing.
